Can a £500 ‘invisible’ haircut ever be worth it?

When a stylist likens the cutting of your hair to architectural design you know you’re not getting a run of the mill kind-of cut. Which is reassuring when said ‘invisible haircut’ comes with a £500 price tag.

“It’s my signature style,” shares iconic hairdresser Frédéric Fekkai, whose charm alone could easily see you part with many more pounds without hesitation. Indeed, one writer once described having her hair cut by him as ‘sex with scissors’. Usually based in the States, he’s now taking select appointments at the new Urban Retreat salon space in London’s Knightsbridge.

Born in Aix-en-Provence, France, 21-year-old Fekkai moved to New York in 1979 and rapidly rose through the beauty ranks. In 1989 he caught the attention of Bergdorf Goodman and was invited to design a salon within the celebrated New York department store. ‘Frédéric Fekkai Beauty Center’ became an instant favourite for a star-studded clientele. Hilary Clinton is a Fekkai woman (even when she was First Lady) alongside icons Demi Moore and Bruce Willis in the 90s.

More recently, Fekkai has tended to the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway and Kate Beckinsale and thanks to his luxury haircare range, become a household name the world over. He later sold his namesake brand, only to buy it back in 2018 and today he straddles the roles of multiple salon owner and brand founder of his luxury product line The One Atelier Fekkai.
