Sacha Baron Cohen has called social media companies “the greatest propaganda machine in history” for spreading hate.
The actor and comedian accused Facebook, Google, YouTube, Twitter, and others, of putting business success above the safety of their users.
He called for them to be regulated, and classified as publishers, making them responsible for fake news, and forcing them to fact-check political adverts.
Speaking after accepting an award from the Anti-Defamation League in New York, Baron Cohen called arguments by Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder, that he was protecting free speech “absurd and ludicrous”.
Baron Cohen, said: “If you pay them, Facebook will run any ‘political’ ad you want.”
He added: “Hate crimes are surging, as are murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities. All this hate and violence is being facilitated by a handful of internet companies that amount to the greatest propaganda machine in history.”
Facebook was approached for comment.
